Thirty-five years ago, I bought a small summer cottage on the shore of Little Glen Lake in Leelanau County, Michigan. I dreamt to someday make this spot my permanent home. That dream has been realized with the thoughtful, creative, and expert skills of Tom Wilcox. He sat down with me and we went through thirty-five years of pictures, notes, and ideas. I wanted a simple, cozy, welcoming cottage that was fully insulated for year-round living and upgraded with modern conveniences. Tom listened and created what I had been dreaming of and more. The result of this remodel is a part of me. It is where I belong. It comforts and soothes my soul with its simple inviting feel.
Tom was so easy to work with and anxious to get the plans just right, which he did do, even with some quirky obstacles to overcome. My builder enjoyed working with Tom and his confident, focused, easy demeanor. This guy is GREAT. He\\'s professional, knowledgeable, caring, attentive, dependable, and a joy to work with. Tom designed a family room addition for our English Tudor style house. His design is a “seamless addition” off the living room. When people come to our home they are surprised to learn that the addition is not part of the original 1930’s construction. We were impressed with Tom’s diligent oversight and attention to detail throughout the construction process. Due to Tom’s expertise and vision as an architect, we now have the addition that we wanted and so much more. See more photos ›

Our family lives in a large Victorian home in a Historic Neighborhood, built in 1882. We had a challenge on our hands when we sought to enhance our family’s living and social space on a fairly small lot which we ambitiously wanted to populate with a new swimming pool, landscaping, three-car garage, mudroom, family room, and bathhouse/bar. How could we do all of this with neighbor buy-in and Historic Commission sign-off for our Building Permit? Answer—Tom Wilcox, Architect. Tom was referred to us by friends and he immediately showed care for the project, professional know-how, and personal service which resulted in a smooth transition from concept, to final drawings, to smooth sailing through the permitting process. His fees were extremely reasonable and the value of his services show every time we attend a neighborhood party where neighbors say, “you guys did a great job with your home . . . it looks like the addition was part of the original house!” See more photos ›

In renovating our 125-year-old house, Tom provided great design ideas that maintained historical features but allowed modern conveniences.
He designed a main staircase to replace one that had been removed when the house had been converted to a two-family years ago. He also used the space well to give us a master suite. And he redesigned the kitchen and basement stairs to give us functionality. During the project, he was on-site checking specifications to keep the project running smoothly.
I recommend Tom Wilcox and would use his services again.

Working with Tom to build a house in Mariemont was a dream.
When we first looked at the design, we right away knew THIS WAS IT! He had taken so much about what we liked and disliked in a house from our meeting with him and put it into our house . . . he even seemed to pick up on things we didn’t even realize we wanted! He took a vested interest in each step of the building process to be sure things were going according to design. Many people still comment on how well our “new” house blends right into this “older” community. See more photos ›

When Tom came into our remodeling project it was an answer to our prayers. We had an ugly aluminum awning hanging over our front door and wanted it removed. The contractor had some suggestions but we weren’t sure what to put in its place. Tom listened to our pie-in-the-sky ramblings and came back with great ideas and detailed sketches. His designs were perfect for our 1935 home! We now have a beautiful front porch that goes across half of our house. Tom’s design blended so well with the existing architecture, guests think it is part of the original house. His specifications for the porch foundation were some of the best our contractor had ever seen. Tom’s attention to detail really made the difference in our addition. See Before & After ›

Tom took over the challenges of our 1860’s row house in need of major renovations. He was able to overhaul the infrastructure while adding beautiful design elements in keeping with the historical character and to navigate through the city requirements for historical preservation.
Tom was innovative and pragmatic in dealing with the limitations of an existing building. We especially loved problem-solving with him about how to use the awkward spaces inherent in a building of that age. He communicated clearly his ideas and was very flexible about incorporating ours. Working with Tom was a very satisfying creative experience and we loved the livability of the finished product.
From a practical standpoint, Tom delivered excellent drawings which made it easy for us to visualize the process. He explored and presented financial options for various aspects of the project. He brought in other design personnel contacts where he thought we needed it. As to be expected, we had surprises “behind the walls” of the old structure. Tom’s experience and technical expertise turned each into a plus. He was timely, reliable, and financially feasible. No higher compliment! A very enjoyable experience!

We had an excellent experience with Tom Wilcox. We hired him to draw up plans for a Master Bedroom and Bath for our 1940’s Cape Cod style home. Tom was extremely creative with our space and kept with the feel and style of our home. He was always professional, friendly, listened to our ideas, and understood our needs. He was “spot on” when we were concerned that we could even afford such a project. He had a great working relationship with our contractor and the construction was seamless. We could not be happier with the end result. Thank You Wilcox Architecture!

Tom Wilcox helped us change our starter home into our forever home. We decided we needed an addition (on top of our house!) to accommodate our growing children. Tom expertly walked us through many floor plans and home designs that more than met our needs. Being designers, Tom patiently worked with our ideas until we were completely satisfied. His technical mastery ensured our plans were approved the first time and the general contractor knew exactly what to build. Thanks to Tom, we have a beautiful new home that we will love for many years to come! See Before & After ›

We really enjoyed working with Tom. First, when he helped us look for a house to buy, and second when we decided to add on to the house we bought. We chose Tom because he had a respect for the integrity of the original house and kept that in mind when doing the kitchen redesign and the addition (we didn't want to just slap a box on the back of the house)—juggling this with the needs of a modern family. No one who sees it knows that it is an addition, and it really changed the house for the better.

I worked with Tom on an addition to my century-old home. He was very creative and willing to listen to any ideas that I expressed. I actually won a prize from the city for the design because it fits so well with the character of my existing home. See more photos ›

We asked Tom to design our constantly wet backyard into our dream outdoor living room. He exceeded our expectations. Every small detail we gave him he incorporated into a spectacular design. But that was not enough. Tom visited our construction nearly every day to make sure that the builders did not cut corners and interpreted his design to his exact high standards. Our yard was transformed and I highly recommend Tom to anyone who has a dream they want to turn into reality. See more photos ›

In June of 2011, we purchased our Hyde Park home recognizing there were a number of issues with the house that needed to be addressed immediately. We also wanted to make several improvements but didn’t intend to change the floor plan in any way. Instead of hiring a general contractor, we retained Tom as a construction consultant and we could not have been happier for doing so. Tom orchestrated the hiring and timing of all the sub-contractors and served as our advocate throughout the whole process. His counsel was invaluable as he made recommendations to solve problems that saved both time and money. Tom also relieved us of the burden of dealing with the sub-contractors. If a contractor was not meeting our expectations, we went to Tom and the issue was immediately resolved. Tom’s professionalism and responsiveness were really impressive and his hourly rate was incredibly reasonable. No major home renovation is ever easy, but we can’t imagine how difficult our project would have been if Tom was not involved.

Tom and I worked very closely on an addition to our historic home in Indian Hill. He would email me two or three versions of a bookcase detail, for example, and I would choose which one I liked. He was very accommodating to my choices, while still staying true to the period design. Putting on an addition to a very old home was tricky, but Tom\\'s attention to detail and knowledge of support structure made our home rock-solid. See more photos ›

Tom did the complete design of a large wrap-around deck and a new basement entrance. He also did study drawings for our first floor remodel. His work was creative, giving our house a new great look. At the same time, he paid close attention to functionality and ease of construction. We would be happy to have Tom do any designs we need in the future.

As an interior designer, I greatly appreciate working with an individual who is very detailed and innovative in developing solutions to challenging architectural building projects. Tom was very attentive to what we were trying to accomplish in designing a free-flowing architectural solution to our challenging kitchen and bedroom additions. The resulting drawings and subsequent construction exceeded our expectations. During construction, any time there was a question; Tom was readily available and quickly developed solutions to address the issue thoroughly and on a timely basis. We would certainly seek his assistance in the future.

Tom designed a front porch for me. It made a real difference—now my house looks welcoming and appealing from the street. And when I sit on my porch swing, the neighbors and dog walkers who watched the porch go up all stop to tell me how beautiful it is!
